Olive growing Pomona

The taggiasco olive-tree

The taggiasco olive-tree is a local cultivar from Western Liguria. The olive-tree has  been cultivated in Liguria since ancient times.

The Greek farmers from Nice and Marseille were the first to encourage a selected cultivation of the olive-trees in the Mediterranean strip, both Provençal and Ligurian, which can be found also during the Roman rule of the region.

After the Barbarian invasions, the Benedectine monks, from the monastery of the Gallinara island, started to cultivate the olive-trees again in Albenga’s valleys in about 1.000 AD.

They brought back to life the olive-growing, they ploughed, they built terraces, the so-called “fasce”, with heavy stones and they managed to make good use of the hilly areas of Albenga’s valleys.
